Color Genes
Very interesting facts about color
genes and how they work. These
genes work the same no matter what
breed of dog usually, except the
Standard (large) Collie carries no
red gene. A Blue dog is a
Black dog underneath, just carries 2
dilute genes. I have not made
charts yet for Sables. Sables
are a lot harder to figure out,
except Sable to Sable should be all
sable. Sables are brown hairs
with a black nose. Red dogs
have red noses. Black, Blue
and Sable have black noses.
Nose color is very important in
color genes. Color genes for
horses and other animals work much
the same way. A gene is a
gene.
White factored (wf) means any white
hair from the navel back, or
white collar extending beyond the
shoulder bones or spot on top
of head. Feet and tail tips do
not count towards white factoring.
Usually it is a white belly all the
way down the hind legs or white
splotches here and there.
White factored is a normal color for
the Border Collie and it comes with
every color. I think it
comes from Borzois being used to
develop the breed eons ago.

Blue & white Border
Collies are simply a Black & white dog that carries 2 copies
of the dilute gene. Any pup out of a Blue dog will
carry the gene, as the Blue dog has Dilute/Dilute, and the
pup will get one of these genes. Dogs that are Black
or Red and carry the gene may or may not give their pup a
Dilute gene, as they are Dilute/No Dilute, since they are
not Blue, but have one copy of it.
